Lanehead

Lanehead

FICTIONAL LOCATION – BECKFOOT

Lanehead was built in 1848 on the site of the Halfpenny Alehouse (visited by the artist JMW Turner in 1797), and when first occupied by the Collingwood family in June 1891 was owned by Rev H A Starkie. The house was bought in 1919 by Miss Emma Holt of Tent Lodge, and was never owned by WG and Edith Collingwood.  Lanehead was, however, purchased by their son-in-law Dr Ernest Altounyan, Dora Collingwood’s husband, and stayed in by their family until the mid-1960s. It has changed much in appearance, having been extended to as an outdoor activity centre. The large conservatory on the south elevation was removed and, much later in 2004, planning permission was granted to add a two-storey extension. This hid a chimney breast on the end wall of the house that was split in two to accommodate a ground floor window directly above a fireplace.
